Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp handed welcome Alisson injury boost as return date set

Liverpool will welcome the news that Alisson Becker is closing in on a return to action. The Brazilian has been sidelined since before the 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa, following a nasty collision in training.

The Reds had initially feared he would be out of action until late November upon original assessment.

Jurgen Klopp has had a torrid time with injuries in the past few weeks, having lost several high-profile stars.

That includes Virgil van Dijk, who is set to undergo surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament after a high tackle from Jordan Pickford in last week’s Merseyside derby.

Thiago Alcantara was also injured in the clash alongside Joel Matip, who both missed the 1-0 win at Ajax in the Champions League.

But things are now looking up for Klopp and according to the Liverpool Echo, Alisson is in line to return next weekend against West Ham.

Speaking ahead of the trip to Amsterdam, Klopp revealed the former Roma shot-stopper was feeling good about his fitness.

“Ali looks very good. We have to see; catching balls and stuff like this is all possible. But we cannot rush it and will not rush it,” he said.

“Actually, it’s a common thing every day when I see Ali, I say: ‘How was it today?’ He always with a big smile tells me of the slight improvements. Today I didn’t see him [yet], so I can’t wait to ask for his progress!”

While Adrian kept a clean sheet against Ajax, his performance was far from convincing and there were several shaky moments.

Nonetheless, the Spaniard did make two important saves to keep the Eredivisie side at bay.

Adrian has faced strong criticism ever since his performance in the Champions League last 16 against Atletico Madrid back in March as the La Liga side won 3-2 at Anfield.

Jamie Carragher has questioned whether Adrian spreads fear into the Liverpool backline. He said on CBS Sports: “There is normally a big difference between a number one goalkeeper and a number two.

“It’s not normally like that in any other positions on the pitch, so he knows he is not at the level of number one. And everybody else in the team knows that.

“There is nothing worse than a goalkeeper coming in and making rash decisions, it makes everyone feel nervous.

“There were a couple of occasions early on, he clattered into Gomez. There was one late on when he comes to punch and he was fortunate that Ajax didn’t equalise.”

Adrian is set to keep his place for the next two matches as Liverpool host Sheffield United and Midtjylland at Anfield before the visit of the Hammers.
