Liverpool and Tottenham consider £50m Leeds transfer battle for key Marcelo Bielsa star

Liverpool and Tottenham are reportedly considering a £50million transfer battle for Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips after his eye-catching performances this season. Phillips has impressed in the Premier League so far this season, having been ever present for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

The defensive midfielder was involved in all three of England’s Nations League games during the international break – and Bielsa says that will only make him better.

“It is very positive as he is competing at international level and he is also disputing for a place with the best players in England,” said the Leeds boss.

“I think that Phillips is a versatile player that can play in different styles.

“In the national team he plays in the centre of the pitch and in our team he plays in the same position. And the things he picks up playing for England will surely make him better.”

Now both Liverpool and Tottenham are weighing up swoops for Phillips in the January transfer window, according to The Mirror.

Phillips, 24, has another four years to run on his Leeds contract, having committed his future to the Yorkshire club before they won promotion last season.

And that means Bielsa’s side would be in the money if he joins one of the Premier league’s big six, who could double his £30,000-per-week wages.

Liverpool have concerns over the future of midfielder Gini Wijnaldum, who is in the final year of his contract at Anfield and was the subject of interest from Barcelona over the summer.

The Dutch midfielder could be open to join his former international boss Ronald Koeman at the Nou Camp ahead of next summer, and Jurgen Klopp will need a replacement.

Phillips has reportedly been identified as an option – and given he can also play centre-half, his versatility would make him attractive to Klopp, who has lost Virgil van Dijk for most of the season due to an ACL injury.

He is being watched by Liverpool’s scouting team, with Leeds’ high-energy pressing style in line with the way the Reds like to play.

Spurs manager Jose Mourinho is also believed to have been impressed by Leeds’ midfield anchorman, and needs a long-term successor to Moussa Sissoko, who will be 32 before the start of next season – amid ongoing debate over whether Eric Dier’s future is as a defensive midfielder or a centre-back.

Aston Villa failed with a £25 million bid for Phillips last year, and it is likely that Liverpool or Tottenham would have to double that to have any hope of persuading Leeds to part with one of their top players.
