'He's a young man!' – Frank Lampard reacts to Hudson-Odoi's Chelsea title claim

Frank Lampard has played down Callum Hudson-Odoi’s claim that Chelsea are serious Premier League title contenders, though admits his team are on the right path.

The west London club are unbeaten in their last eight games in all competitions, moving up to fifth place in the table – three points off top spot – and are also the league’s top scorers with 20 goals.

Having now started to match their attacking flair with defensive resilience and clean sheets, Hudson-Odoi suggested a title challenge was very much a possibility.

‘We’ve started really well and we want to maintain that,’ said the winger, who shone for England’s Under-21 side during the international break

‘We want to keep building, keep getting goals, keep getting assists and keep working hard as a team and hopefully, you never know, we could win the title as well.’

But Blues boss Lampard has laughed off Hudson-Odoi’s excitable claims and, while he appreciates the confidence and belief of his young charge, insists they have plenty of work to do to become genuine contenders for the title.

Asked about Hudson-Odoi’s comments, Lampard laughed and replied: ‘Yeah he’s a young man! He’s excited! I get it.

‘I like confidence, I like the players feeling like that.

‘I’m delighted with Callum going away and playing and scoring goals and, for me, as a young, developing player your performances like that, when you have Callum’s talent, will always be a reflection of how you train and prepare yourself and all those things.

‘So it’s brilliant news for us and for Callum.

‘As for us as a team, my job is to dampen what he’s said there and say that we know there’s a long way to go.

‘We’re eight games in, we’re in a decent position, recently we’re playing well.

‘But there’s so many things that we have to keep working on and improving before we can really start getting involved in that conversation. That’s up to us.’

Chelsea are next in action against Newcastle on Saturday in the early kick-off, with Lampard set to be without Christian Pulisic and Thiago Silva while a number of players will only report for their first training session this afternoon or Friday morning.
