Gianfranco Zola offers insight into Kepa Arrizabalaga struggles at Chelsea

Chelsea hero Gianfranco Zola has admitted his surprise at the way Kepa Arrizabalaga has struggled at Stamford Bridge.

Kepa joined the Blues from Athletic Bilbao in a world record transfer in 2018 though never looked settled in the Premier League.

The Spaniard made a number of mistakes and Chelsea boss Frank Lampard took action this summer as he brought in Edouard Mendy as new No 1.

Zola is backing Kepa to come good and has confessed he has been shocked by the errors and performances from the shot-stopper.

“I’m very surprised,” Zola told talkSPORT. “I know he is very young and he came to Chelsea for big money and that is a big burden to carry on your shoulders, and in a way this is probably affecting him.

“I could understand a little bit of difficulty, but this is going beyond what was expected and it surprised me. And I am sorry for the boy because he is a good boy and a good goalkeeper.

“He has to pick himself up and do what he can do and show people he is different, because I believe he has got potential.”

Mendy returned from injury this week as Chelsea began their Champions League campaign with a goalless draw against Europa League winners Sevilla.

And Lampard opened up on his goalkeeping dilemmas, admitting the door is not closed to any of his stars.

Asked if Mendy is already Chelsea's first-choice, Lampard said: "At the moment yes; he's shown his quality. The way he's played, he's played very well, that's two clean sheets for him already.

"As it stands he is [the number one] but that's always up for grabs. But the way he's playing I'm very happy. I was pleased with the professional element to the win.
