Five problems Solskjaer has to fix after Ed Woodward backing
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a hugely important list of issues to solve after he was given the public backing of executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.
His future in the role of Manchester United manager has been hotly debated, with pressure continuing to mount after a poor run of form.
Old Trafford bigwig Woodward insists that the club is firmly behind the Norwegian though.
As part of a much broader statement, Woodward said: “On the pitch, while there is still hard work ahead to achieve greater consistency, we remain absolutely committed to the positive path we are on under Ole as the team continues to develop.”
So here’s give key problems Solskjaer must fix after Woodward’s backing.
Settling the number one debate
David de Gea has kept his place between the sticks this season, and he’s done a very average job.
So where does that leave Dean Henderson?
If the Englishman is to have a big future, he needs to be playing regularly, not sitting on the bench.
This will should be Solskjaer’s number one priority.
United have conceded 14 goals from their opening seven league games – including six against Tottenham at home.
It might take a blockbuster January signing, but the Red Devils will sink fast if they don’t sure up their backline.
Best out of Pogba
If Solskjaer gets the best out of Paul Pogba again, he will make his own life a lot easier.
On his day, Pogba is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world.
He’s in a rut right now though, and an eight minute cameo won’t fix that.
Qualify for CL knockout rounds
Nobody wants to watch their team on Thursday nights when you know you could have had a chance at going for glory in the Champions League.
United are in a good position to get through after the wins over PSG and RB Leipzig, but the defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir show that nothing is a foregone conclusion.
Get Greenwood going again
This is another issue that should be high up on Solskjaer’s list of priorities.
Whatever is going with Mason Greenwood needs to be resolved, for the sake of the player’s future.
We’ve all seen just how much potential Greenwood has for United and England, he just needs to go out and realise it now.
