Arsenal missed out on signing Liverpool ace Diogo Jota before his move to Atletico Madrid in 2016, according to reports.
Jota has hit the ground running at Anfield since completing a £45million switch from Wolves in September, registering seven goals in his first 11 appearances for the Premier League champions.
He is already providing Jurgen Klopp with a selection dilemma on Merseyside, with some Reds fans calling for him to replace Roberto Firmino at the pinpoint of their attack.
The Portugal international has scored goals pretty much everywhere he has been, bagging 44 in 131 games for Wolves and netting nine goals in his brief loan stint at Porto.
He also scored 15 times in 45 games for first club Pacos de Ferreira, an impressive return which eventually earned him a lucrative move to Atletico Madrid.
Diego Simeone’s side handed him a five-year contract back in 2016 – and The Athletic claim Arsenal were one of several clubs they beat to his signature.
It is believed the Gunners and London rivals West Ham sent scouts to watch Jota play for Portuguese outfit Pacos, yet their efforts to lure him to the English capital proved unsuccessful.
The forward is said to have turned down “various offers” in favour of joining Atletico, whose style of business impressed him.
“Atletico’s way of presenting their offer seemed serious to me,” he explained.
“The financial offer was the same as the others. I liked how the club’s owner went about it.”
Nevertheless, Jota failed to make a success of his move to Atletico, with the Spanish club immediately loaning him out to Porto.

And despite an impressive stint back in Portugal, Simeone and co decided to send him out on loan again the following year to Wolves.
Jota’s initial return of 18 goals in 46 games helped Espirito Santo’s men gain promotion to the Premier League in his debut season, before another 26 goals in his next 85 games ensured they achieved consecutive seventh-place finishes in the top flight.
