‘Never takes the wrong option’: Andrew Johns anoints ‘salt of the earth’ Cameron Smith as GOAT
Rugby league Immortal Andrew Johns has picked Storm skipper Cameron Smith as the greatest player he has seen in his time watching the game.
Johns is in many people’s eyes the best to ever play, but the Knights legend has no doubt the Storm skipper is the greatest player since the early 1990s at least.
“For me it is Cameron because I wasn’t old enough to understand the brilliance and dominance of Wally Lewis,” Johns said on SEN’s Morning Glory.

NRL: While Melbourne Storm legend Cameron Smith has yet to make a decision on his playing future, he may have hinted he will play another season ahead of the Grand Final.

“Wally made Origin and without him I don’t think it would be what it is even now.
“But I think Cameron is the best I have ever seen. He plays the game differently and it is like he is watching the game from 20 metres above.
“He never takes the wrong option. He is not a player with incredible flair or pace, but he just takes the right option every time.”
Smith will play his 430th and likely final game in the Grand Final against the Panthers and Johns believes his influence has never been more crucial than in the 2020 season.

“In the modern game when momentum swings so quickly with the six again rule the only team that can hold momentum or get momentum back is Melbourne and it is on the back of Cameron Smith,” Johns said.
“His kicking game is perfect. An area we don’t talk about is his passing game. When I watch his passing game every pass hits the mark.

“The first pass is so important. The first pass hits the mark the next couple do. His goal-kicking is incredible. He is a great captain and leader.”
Johns also doesn’t understand the criticism that Smith receives and believes he will go down as one of the game’s true gentlemen.

“I’ve only met him a few times and lately he has been getting a hard time,” Johns said.
“For me he is probably the most humble champion I’ve ever met and a really good fella. A salt of the earth type of guy.
“And I love that he just loves the game of rugby league so much.
“For me it is a joy to watch him play every time and for me he is the greatest I’ve seen.”
